Frequently Asked Questions

Please see below questions I commonly receive from clients.  If your question is not addressed here or if you would simply like to discuss further, please feel free to email me at kplcounseling@gmail.com.  I want you and your loved ones to feel as comfortable as possible.

What is the first step in starting therapy? Where do I begin?

This is very simple.  If you are a new client, the first step is to schedule an initial consult.  You can do this by either emailing me directly or calling.  We will arrange a call (either by phone or video call), and we will go over a few basic topics.  The questions are simple and by no means, are you meant to have all the answers!  We will discuss why you are interested in therapy, any issues currently going on, if there is anything specific that you are looking to achieve (this can be as simple as 'I would like to feel less anxiety in my daily life' to something more complex like 'I need to better communicate with my ex-husband.'  We will also discuss how often you would like to meet, if you have insurance that is taken at the practice, any relevant medical history, etc.

What are my options in terms of frequency and length of sessions?

I see clients up to three times a week for one hour each, though there is no requirement.  I see some patients once or twice a month and again, the duration of the session varies depending on each client's needs.  I am flexible in timing (early in the morning to later in the evening and on weekends if necessary).  I do prefer that clients stick to a regular weekly schedule but I understand that our lives are busy and things do come up.  We will make this work.

What is the cost?

My practice accepts most private health insurances while also offering the option to pay individually.

Are you available to speak to clients via phone or text outside of regularly scheduled therapy?

I do everything I can to make myself available to my clients outside of scheduled sessions.  It is entirely understandable that life throws things our way at inopportune times and speaking with your therapist is a great way to help you through these difficult times.  I do not have a steadfast rule when it comes to such unscheduled contact, and I will always call you back as soon as possible.  Some clients might require more frequent and regularly timed check-ins; these can be discussed in greater detail during initial consultation to determine the manner in which they can occur based on client needs.

Do you allow for in-person sessions?

Like the rest of the world at the moment, the current pandemic is dictating much of our in-person interactions.  We are following all state and federal guidelines and taking every precaution necessary to keep clients and KPL Counseling LTD staff safe.  Currently, all appointments are occurring via video or phone, however, we will revisit this as it becomes safe to meet in person.

Do you encourage family sessions or couples therapy?

Absolutely!  I have found that in my years as a therapist, some of my most productive sessions occur with my patient and his or her loved ones.  Including friends/family in the journey towards positive mental health often results in better communication and a sound understanding of what each other's perspective is.  So much of therapy involves our relationships with those closest to us.  I see nothing but opportunity when our loved ones are willing to be involved in this healing process.

Do I need a referral from a doctor to see you?

Not at all.  I do see clients who have been recommended from a physician or psychiatrist, but it is not necessary.  Simply send an email or give me a call.  We will get it going from there!

How do I know if I should see a therapist?

There is no single rule to dictate whether or not you must be in therapy.  Most health professionals will tell you that there is no harm in seeing a therapist; only an enormous potential for upside.  I happen to agree!  Mental health, especially right now, is only becoming more and more important.  The challenges we face every day can often become overwhelming and lead to anxiety and depression among other things.  Speaking with a therapist on a regular basis helps you manage and overcome each unique issue in a way that best suits you.
